According to Chris Turner, an engineer with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District, the Wachapreague Channel dredging program will commence in mid-May and should be wrapped up within three to four weeks.

“Hopefully when the project is complete we’ll be able to provide a channel depth of at least six feet at low tide, ” stated Turner, and added that the contractor, Cottrell Contracting Corporation, has 90 days to complete the work under the agreement.

An area which will be dredged under the Corps’ plan includes locations from the confluence of Finney Creek and Bradford Bay eastward to the junction with the Burton’s Bay channel, reports delmarvanow.com.

Regarding this cleanup plan, Wachapreague Councilman John Joeckel , said: “ It’s not just a Wachapreague thing; it’s a national problem, the lack of dredging. The Corps wants to do it, but they are constricted because of funding problems.”

Cottrell Contracting plans to move its dredging equipment to the site around May 1.
