The Port of Gulfport is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to study the feasibility of a 47-foot-deep ship channel in Gulfport, reports The Sunherald.
The expansion would be needed to handle the larger ships already docking at other Gulf and East Coast ports.
One of the Port’s restoration goals is achieving a deeper channel.
The Port Restoration Program currently has underway more than $57 million in construction projects, according to portofthefuture.com
In 2012 the Port of Gulfport handled more than 202,000 TEUs and moved more than two million tons of cargo through the Port.
