The National Assembly called for an urgent need to regulate the mining and dredging industry in the State through the Ogun State Regulation of Sand Dealing and Dredging Operation law 2013, which also passed through the second reading.

Opening debate on the bill tagged HB 30/OG/2013, the Majority Leader, Hon. Israel Jolaoso, opined that when passed, it would introduce license and permit to the stakeholders in the industry to ensure compliance on safety rule and protection of the environment.

He listed other highlights of the proposed law to include availability of accurate data base on the mineral resources across the State, saying that it would also go a long way in generating money into the coffers of the State Government to further finance various developmental projects in the State.

In their contributions, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Tola Banjo as well as Honourables Olayiwola Ojodu, Olakunle Oluomo, Aina Akinpelu, Segun Solarin and Babatunde Edunjobi, emphasized that when passed, the bill would curtail environmental degradation, sharp practices and make operators comply with environmental protection rules.

Meanwhile, the house has gone on a three week recess and would reconvene on May, 23rd 2013.
