On schedule and within budget, the $630,185 beach maintenance and improvement project at South Beach Marco Island is complete.
Despite being peak tourist season during construction, the schedule for work on the beach required completion within the 60 days prior to the start of turtle nesting season on May 1 and this was accomplished successfully.
The Marco Beach renourishment project from the Somerset condominium south to the Belize at Cape Marco was done by contractor Cavache, Inc.
In addition, rebuilding the five existing rock erosion control structures by Florida Marine Construction at a cost of $728,578 is progressing as planned. Maintenance and improvement of the two groins near the Cozumel condominium that are located partially on the upland portion of the beach and partially in Gulf waters were finished by May 1 to avoid turtle nesting season.
Work on three rock breakwater structures west of Cape Marco entirely off shore in the Gulf will be finished by the end of this year (2013). The remaining rebuild work for the two groins and three breakwaters will be conducted from the water using a barge, as required in the permit.
Total cost of the Marco project is $1,358,763.
