Congressman Jon Runyan applauded the Army Corps of Engineers for their plan to include the Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet Shore Protection project in its newly released report to Congress.
The ACOE estimates the cost of the project to be $85 million. Runyan made the following statement regarding the report:
“I am pleased that the Army Corps understood how badly towns like Seaside Heights, Mantoloking, Lavallette, and Normandy Beach need this project constructed to prevent damage from potential future storms . Hurricane Sandy proved that these areas have serious vulnerabilities. We have no time to waste, and I urge the ACOE to get to work on construction as soon as possible as these towns represent some of the most at risk areas on the entire New Jersey shoreline.”
This report, attached, was commissioned by the Hurricane Sandy recovery legislation passed out of the House of Representatives on January 15, 2013, and outlines the beach protection projects on the east coast the Army Corps of Engineers plans on constructing with Hurricane Sandy funding.
On March 14th, Runyan wrote the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works advocating for inclusion of the project in this report.
On March 14th, Runyan also wrote the Mayors of Mantoloking, Toms River, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, Lavallette, Brick, and Berkeley urging them to work with homeowners to acquire the necessary easements by May 1st so that construction on the project can begin as soon as possible.
