The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is inviting the public to an outreach meeting (June 12, Glenn Hall Park, 5415 Sandburg Drive) to discuss upcoming American River levee work at a city sump station near the River Park neighborhood.
Representatives from federal, state and local agencies will be available to answer questions about the construction method and associated construction activities scheduled to begin in July and continue through November.
The levee work at the City of Sacramento’s Sump Station 10 is necessary to fill in a 48-foot long, 16-foot deep V-shaped gap in the top of the levee’s cutoff wall that continuously runs underneath the sump’s pipelines. These pipelines obstructed the wall’s construction more than a decade ago, leaving a wedge where the wall fails to reach its designed height.
The Corps built more than 20 miles of seepage cutoff walls into American River levees between 2000 and 2002. Areas where construction was complicated by encroachments such as power lines, bridges or utilities were set aside for later construction. Cutoff walls help prevent water from seeping through and underneath the levee as it flows from Folsom Dam to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
Glenn Hall Park, Paradise Beach and all River Park thoroughfares will remain open throughout construction. Signage and flaggers will help restrict levee-road access, from Glenn Hall Park to 28th Street, for public safety from July 8th to November 13th.
Specific construction times will depend on a number of factors including weather and wildlife nesting.
