The Environment Agency has completed the construction of a new flood defence wall that will protect 125 properties in Chelmer Village, Essex.
The wall is 780 metres in length, up to 1 metre above ground and has a depth of at least 8 metres underground.
The scheme was a partnership between the Environment Agency and Chelmsford City Council to prevent the passage of flood water from the River Chelmer to the residential area of Chelmer Village.
Cllr Neil Gulliver from Chelmsford City Council said: “ We very much welcome the completion of the flood defences around Chelmer Village.
“It is an important piece of investment by the Council and Environment Agency that will safeguard many local homes vulnerable to flooding.”
David Knagg, Operations Manager at the Environment Agency said: “ We are very pleased to have completed this major new flood defence.
“During flooding, the new flood gates will be closed to prevent the flow of water through the floodwall. These gates will be closed by staff from the Environment Agency or Chelmsford City Council.”
The project cost £1.74 million and construction started in July 2012.
