U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre announced that the Wilmington Port, Brunswick County Beaches, Pender County Beaches, and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway have received $24,548,804 in federal funds.
Congressman McIntyre stated, “ This is a great day for North Carolina’s coast! Ensuring federal funds for our coastal communities is one of my highest priorities, and we are thrilled that these funds are coming home to make a difference. We will continue to fight for every penny for every pebble of sand because our coast is worth it! ”
In March 2013, Congressman McIntyre met with Corps of Engineers Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy to discuss the importance of federal funds to North Carolina’s coast and to request funding for specific essential projects in the Army Corps of Engineers 2013 Work Plan.
Specific details of the funding in the 2013 Work Plan are:
• Wilmington Port — $16,376,182 for Operations and Maintenance;
• Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway — $1,896,200 for Operations and Maintenance;
• Cape Fear River Above Wilmington — $488,022 for Operations and Maintenance;
• Surf City and North Topsail Beach – $274,450 for Investigations;
• Wilmington Harbor Improvements – $49,900 for Investigations;
• Brunswick County Beaches — $5,464,050 for Construction (Ocean Isle Beach, Caswell Beach, Oak Island, and Holden Beach).
