The Fiscal Year 2013 Work Plan was released by the Office of Management and Budget and included $20.4 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District to perform a beach renourishment at Folly Beach.
The funds received, along with the City of Folly Beach’s 15 percent cost share, will allow the Charleston District to award a contract before the end of the fiscal year and begin construction in late-October.
The renourishment will place approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of sand back onto the 5.47 mile long federal project section of Folly Beach and will take approximately seven months to complete.
The project will not have any negative impact on the work currently being done by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission and should tie in with that section of beach.
“ We’re excited that the work plan included funds to renourish Folly Beach ,” said Lt. Col. Ed Chamberlayne, Charleston District commander. “ The community has been very active in working with the South Carolina delegation to let them know the importance of this project. ”
The FY13 Work Plan also included $14.2 million for operations and maintenance of Charleston Harbor, $1.575 million for the Post 45 feasibility study, $4.5 million for the Cooper River Rediversion Project, and $875,000 for condition surveys in the federal waterways.
No funds were received for Georgetown Harbor or the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The Charleston District will continue coordinate with the sponsors of these projects to evaluate future possibilities.
