The U.S. Forest Service is planning to dredge and restock three western South Dakota lakes that have been degraded by silt contamination, reports argusleader.com.

This dredging project includes Horse Thief, Bismarck and Lakota lake.

Silt pollution which can be caused by: Rainwater run off from topsoil stripped areas of site, pumping out and dewatering of excavations and cleaning of ditches and drains, had deteriorated the water quality of the river.

“ These lakes are all 50-plus years old. They’re in need of help .”says David Pickford, recreation specialist for the Hell Canyon Ranger District in Custer.

The dredging work is to be done over the next two winters.
