Terminal de Contenedores de Tenerife (TCT), the concessionaire of the new container terminal at the East Dock in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, inaugurated the new facilities.
The event was attended by the President of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, the Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, and the Chairman of the OHL Group, Juan-Miguel Villar Mir.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of OHL emphasized that “ Spain has a port system of general interest with great growth potential thanks to its geographical location, near one of the world’s busiest sea routes, and has established itself as a strategic area in international shipping, in addition to being the European Union’s country with the longest coastline, 8,000 km. ”
He added that “ the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to become a benchmark international logistic hub thanks to its strategic location, at the crossroads of Europe, America and Africa, and a supply base in the Atlantic Ocean .”
This port concession, which was awarded to OHL Concesiones in February 2012, successfully completed last year all the milestones envisaged in its investment plan for the terminal’s construction and start of operations.
Juan-Miguel Villar Mir acknowledged the effort made by the concessionaire as yet another example of the Group’s firm commitment to the international projection of the Spanish ports industry.
The new terminal is designed to handle import, export and trans-shipment traffic, can operate at least two Super-Post Panamax vessels simultaneously, and is forecasting annual traffic of 620,000 TEUs, in addition to dealing with local traffic and sustaining its expected growth over the next 30 years.
