Gladstone residents are being urged to take a last look at the East Shores waterfront this weekend before it receives a major facelift.
Construction of the $45 million Gladstone Coal Exporter’s Maritime Precinct started on Monday, July 29.
The major community project, which is being delivered by Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) and Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) promises to transform the waterfront into a much-needed, world-class recreational area, kicked off on Monday morning when Hutchinson Builders started works.
To establish the construction site, a section of Flinders Parade, from Auckland Point Terminal to the end of Joseph Banks Park, will be closed to the public.
GPC Chief Executive Officer Leo Zussino said the partial closure of Flinders Parade was necessary during construction, but any inconvenience would be well worth the wait when the new recreational precinct opens in mid-2014.
“East Shores is a wonderful piece of community infrastructure, funded through a successful partnership between GPC and WICET.
“This valuable asset will provide the community with enhanced opportunities for recreation, and take advantage of the natural beauty of the Gladstone harbour.
“In the years to come, residents and visitors alike will enjoy the recreational experience that will be available to them as the three stage East Shores precinct is delivered to the community,’’ Mr Zussino said.
Meanwhile, WICET General Manager – Project Development, Gerry Randell said WICET was excited to be helping make such an important community project a reality.
“WICET is proud to be providing the $35 million in foundation funding for the East Shores redevelopment, and to work alongside GPC to deliver this key community asset,” he said.
“We envisage that the new-look East Shores will be where locals and visitors, of all ages, meet, relax, exercise and have fun. We hope that it will enhance what is already a beautiful natural asset and give the community another opportunity to enjoy their waterfront.”
The Gladstone Coal Exporter’s Maritime Precinct will include a water play park facility, waterfront promenade, boardwalk incorporating a viewing platform, BBQ’s and an abundance of green, open spaces.
