On Monday, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives, together with the state officials, held an on-site construction update of the Indian River Inlet dune replenishment project.
This project, which also aims to dredge 500,000 cubic yards of sand, began on July 23.
Gov. Jack A. Markell said: “For a state like Delaware, a low-lying state, this effort is incredibly important.”
The governor announced that the state had ensured as much as $30 million in federal funds to rebuild its beaches.
Rebuilding the dune at the same time as dredging the inlet is a great utilization of materials, said Tony Pratt, DNREC Shoreline and Waterway Management Administrator .
“Something positive,” he added.
Mr. Pratt expects dune replenishment and dredging work to last two to three more weeks.
