The state Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the proposed disposal of dredged material from the Detroit Harbor Navigation Channel.

The meeting will be held at the Mosling Recreation Center, 1877 Lakeview Road, Washington Island at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday August 27.

The Town of Washington has proposed to dredge within the Detroit Harbor Navigational Channel. The dredging will improve access to the harbor for the Washington Island Ferry Line as well as meeting other navigational needs.

The town has requested that DNR grant an exemption from solid waste regulations so that approximately 134,500 cubic yards of dredged material can be disposed of on town property located north of Gunnlaugsson Road and south of the town’s recycling facility.

DNR has made a preliminary determination that the proposed action would not result in significant adverse environmental effects.

The purpose of the meeting is to solicit public comment on the proposal. There will be a brief introduction and explanation of the project by DNR and town representatives. The meeting will then be opened up for questions and comments.
