The Laidley community will be better protected from future floods with the Newman Government fast-tracking money to build vital levees and drainage systems.
Community Recovery and Resilience Minister David Crisafulli said almost $1 million had been set aside to start work on a levee around the Laidley CBD and at Narda Lagoon, and an extension of major drainage systems around Coates and Storr Streets.
Flood monitoring cameras will also be installed on roads at Glen Cairn and Junction View.
“Laidley residents and businesses have suffered for too long from floodwaters tearing through their town ,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“We’re carrying out the most ambitious infrastructure plan in a generation and we’re determined to work with the council to deliver the flood protection locals deserve, ” Mr Crisafulli said.
“It will mark a turning point for communities threatened by flooding, and to achieve that, it has to be community led.
“Locals know best what their community needs to protect it, and we’ll drive maximum value from the funds that we’ve got to deliver those defences.”
The cash injection follows the $2.3 million given to the Lockyer Valley Regional Council last year for the Forest Hill levee and other flood projects under the council’s ‘Rebuilding Lockyer Better Initiative’.
“This year we’ve streamlined the application process so councils can submit one application for three State flood funds, and that money will get out to communities as quickly as possible, ” Mr Crisafulli said.
“After years of government inaction, we’re going to help deliver the projects people need to defend themselves against flooding.”
