The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a contract in the amount of $13,287,950 to Seattle, Wash.-based Manson Construction Company to perform maintenance dredging within the Galveston inner and outer bar, entrance channel and a portion of the Houston Ship Channel.
The contractor is required to remove approximately 3,000,000 cubic yards of shoaled material from these channel reaches.
“This periodic maintenance dredging provides sufficient channel depth for the transit of deep draft vessels which call on the facilities at the Port of Houston, Texas City and Galveston as well as various industries along the channel ,” said Tricia Campbell, an operations manager with the USACE Galveston District . “All dredge material from this contract will be placed in an offshore dredged material disposal site.”
According to Campbell, the ports of Houston, Texas City and Galveston rank 2nd, 11th and 41st (respectively) based on total tonnage transited through each port.
Work is scheduled to begin in September 2013 with an estimated completion date of December 2013.
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
