The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awarded a $1,496,125 contract for maintenance dredging of the lower Detroit River to Ryba Marine Construction Co., of Cheboygan, Mich.
“This important dredging project will help maintain a key Great Lakes navigational channel to keep cargo moving – products like iron ore, limestone, coal and cement that are vital to the regional economy, ” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer . “ Waterborne transportation of commodities is economical and environmentally friendly, and it plays a vital role in helping the region’s business and industry. ”
Ryba Marine will dredge 150,000 cubic yards of sand, silt and organic material from the East Outer Channel where the river runs into Lake Erie. The material will be deposited at the Pointe Mouillee confined disposal facility in Berlin Township, Mich. The work is expected to begin in mid-September and wrap up in mid-November.
The contract was awarded under the Corps’ Multiple Award Task Order Contract, MATOC, which the Detroit District established with 10 companies capable of dredging in the Great Lakes. The MATOC is designed to provide greater flexibility and expedite the bid solicitation-award process for dredging in Great Lakes commercial shipping channels and harbors.
