Daniel Bastreri and Lauren Hughes are the latest marine experts to have been brought on board by independent UK ecology specialist, Thomson Ecology, as it continues to build its pool of specialist expertise in the marine ecology sector.

Daniel Bastreri joins Thomson Ecology as Principal Marine Consultant. He is an experienced marine scientist and joins from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), bringing with him a wealth of experience working on evidence-based assessment, regulation and mitigation of human impacts on the marine environment.

Daniel says: “ I look forward to applying my years of experience working in the private and public sectors, providing environmental impact advice on major marine projects including new ports and offshore wind farms to the commercial sector. I will be building Thomson Ecology’s capacity in consulting, project management and business development.”

Joining Daniel is Dr Lauren Hughes, specialist carcinologist and marine biologist , who joins Thomson’s Letchworth biodiversity hub from the Australian Museum in Sydney. As Principal Taxonomist, Lauren will be contributing her expertise to the quality control of benthic marine projects and to the continuing development of UNICORN, the company’s marine biological data management system.

Lauren says: “ With Crustacea forming a major component of North Atlantic diversity and abundance, there are a lot of fauna to keep me busy. Taxonomy is an ever-changing hypothesis-driven science, with a strong historical legacy. It is exciting to merge the latest academic output with commercial needs.”

Lauren is an active member of the global community of ‘crust’ workers and has already contributed to international publications on over 300 species including the description of 100 new marine species.
