The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awards a $1.4 million contract for a construction and dredging project at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Mich.
Located on West Grand Traverse Bay, the college prepares students to be merchant marine officers and business professionals at its Great Lakes Maritime Academy.
The $1,471,501 contract was awarded to Great Lakes Dock & Materials, LLC, of Muskegon, Mich. The contractor will demolish an old revetment in the harbor consisting of deteriorated timber and concrete and replace it with a 250-foot-long, 22-foot-wide pier. The contractor will also dredge the harbor to a depth of 16 feet, removing approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand.
“The new pier will upgrade the infrastructure the college needs to train its merchant marine cadets, ” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer . “Great Lakes Maritime Academy, the nation’s only freshwater maritime academy, plays an important role in Michigan’s economy and our way of life. We are pleased this project can go forward.”
To construct the pier, the contractor will place crushed limestone between double-walled steel sheet pile, to be topped with a 15-inch reinforced concrete cap. More than 850 tons of armor stone will be placed on both sides of the pier. Ten mooring cleats will be attached to the pier to accommodate training and research vessels. Work is expected to begin this fall.
