The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue its Hurricane Sandy recovery operations during the federal government shutdown created by the lapse in federal funding.
The Hurricane Sandy recovery program includes restoring previously constructed Corps projects that were severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy, repairing Sandy-damaged navigation channels and structures that the Corps has built and maintains, and working with partners to develop plans and schedules to construct flood and storm damage risk reduction projects at sites where either an authorized but not yet constructed Corps project or a partially constructed Corps project existed.
The Department of Defense civilians who support these activities will continue working during the shutdown because appropriations for the Hurricane Sandy recovery program were received as part of the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013.
In addition to Hurricane Sandy recovery operations, the lapse in federal funds will have no impact on the essential operations of the dams, hurricane barriers, and other federally maintained flood risk reduction sites. Corps-operated campgrounds and recreation areas will remain open, provided the shutdown is of short duration.
