The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has reinstated three programmatic general permits in the state of Florida, effective immediately.
The permits had previously been issued to the state of Florida, Miami-Dade County and the city of Cape Coral for minor projects with minimal impacts to aquatic resources. They were suspended in early October because the Corps and other federal agencies involved with oversight and consultation were unable to perform those functions during the federal government shutdown.
Programmatic general permits are typically used to simplify and expedite the processing of Department of the Army permits. They are issued by the Corps and administered by other government entities on the Corps’ behalf, avoiding unnecessary duplication of effort.
The Corps oversees the administration of the programmatic general permits and consults with other federal resource agencies to ensure compliance with appropriate laws and authorities, including the Rivers and Harbors Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.
