The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, announced that construction operations will begin today for the Broward County Beach Erosion Control Project.

The work is in response to impacts from Hurricane Sandy’s passage in 2012, and is 100% federally funded under the Flood Control and Coastal Emergency (FCCE) program.

Eastman Aggrregate Enterprises, LLC of Lake Worth, Fla. will finish mobilizing their equipment this weekend and start delivering sand to the beach today. Sand placement is expected to occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday. The project completion date is scheduled for January 2014.

Work will begin immediately-south of Hillsboro Inlet, Pompano Beach and progress 5.1 miles southward to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Crews will place approximately 115,000 cubic-yards of beach quality sand at an estimated cost of $7.1 million.
