The large freeze dredging assignment in the Värtan Harbour, Stockholm, is about to get started.
A total of 3500 square meters will be treated. This groundbreaking Swedish technology is very interesting in many cases making it possible to remove the pollutions in the sea bed in frozen sections rather than stirring up the soil as during conventional dredging.
There are now also discussions about applying the method at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.
According to Klas Dagertun, CEO at Frigeo, it is possible to prevent radioactive pollution from entering the groundwater by creating a long ice barrier using the freeze dredging technology.
