The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has recorded its ever highest daily container volume, which is 9,884 TEUs on the 2nd November 2013. The previous highest volume of 9,659 TEUs was reported by the SLPA on the 24th June 2013.
By the end 31st October 2013, Sri Lanka Ports Authority had handled a cumulative throughput of 2,080,253 TEUs for the period up by 7.5% compared to the total container throughput of 1,936,394 TEUs for the same period last year. The container throughput of transshipment by SLPA by end October 2013 has been up by 12.5% compared to the same period last year. In the month of October 2013, SLPA had also recorded an 8% increase in container handling compared to the same period in 2012.
Accordingly, the total container throughput of the Port of Colombo by end first three quarters 2013 has been recorded as at 3,222,646 against 3,151,804 TEUs for the same period in 2012 marking an increase of 2.2%. The total container throughput of transshipment operations of the Port of Colombo for the period 2013 has also marked an increase of 4.6%.
At present, Sri Lanka is being developed in infrastructure sector rapidly after the 30 years civil war. As clearly indicated in the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ the vision of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa – the President of Sri Lanka, development has been boosted by the Government in every corner of the island, to fulfill the demand of local development projects.
The new measures implemented by the management led by Dr. Priyath B. Wickrama the Chairman of SLPA under guidance of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa the President of Sri Lanka and instructions of Hon. Rhoitha Abeygunawardena – the Project Minister of Highways, Port and Shipping and according to the procedures in the three year plan to develop the local ports, such as the new Human Resources Information System (HRIS) procedures, renovation of infrastructure and efficient Terminal Management Systems (TMS) and related processes that assist towards efficient and smooth operation of port activities at SLPA have resulted in the current progress and growth rates that has been continuing to develop since the dawn of the new era.
The recent opening of the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) of the Colombo Port Expansion Project, the rapid development of the road network in and outside the Port of Colombo, the arrival of brand new operational equipment at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT) and machinery and gears at the port as well as the operations commenced via Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port (MRMRP) have also contributed largely to the enhanced efficiency and productivity of SLPA showcasing its dedication and commitment to the socio-economic development in all sectors of Sri Lanka.
