Pike Industries Inc., is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, to conduct work in waters of the United States in conjunction with expanding the Hooksett Crushed Stone Quarry in Hooksett, New Hampshire.
Pike Industries, Inc. proposes to discharge fill material into waters and wetlands in conjunction with the expansion of a quarry located off of Hackett Road in Hooksett, just west of the I-93 Toll Plaza. Five acres of waters and wetlands would be lost. Approximately 100 acres of watershed tributary to these waters would be cleared, grubbed and regraded during the process of removing overburden material preparatory to quarrying the underlying ledge.
The work is proposed in waters and wetlands tributary to the Merrimack River at Hackett Hill Road in Hooksett.
The quarried stone would be processed and sold for building roads and other construction projects. To mitigate for the loss of wetlands and associated watershed impacts, Pike Industries proposes to preserve approximately 100 acres in the vicinity of the existing and expanded pit and to contribute $200,000 to the New Hampshire Aquatic Resources Mitigation Fund with which the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) would create and conserve other valuable aquatic resources.
The application for the federal permit was filed with the Corps of Engineers in compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which regulates the discharge or fill of material in United States waters, including wetlands.
