The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, recently awarded a contract to remove a damaged floodwall and reconstruct portions of the Mississippi River levee in Buras, LA.
This project is a part of the New Orleans to Venice (NOV), Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS).
The $11.6 million contract calls for Hamp’s Construction LLC, to demolish the damaged floodwall and construct a levee enlargement on 2 miles of NOV-MRL in Buras. Currently the risk reduction that exists is at 15-16 foot elevation but the new levee risk reduction elevation will be 17.5 feet. The company will also realign and resurface access ramps along with seed and mulch the area. The project is scheduled to be complete in August of 2014.
The existing NOV Federal levees are located on the westbank of Plaquemines Parish from St. Jude to Venice (back levees and co-located MRL) and on the eastbank from Phoenix to Bohemia.
The Corps continues to work closely with its partners in Plaquemines Parish Government on the construction of risk reduction projects in the parish.
