The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract in the amount of $21,253,000 to Weeks Marine, Inc. for maintenance dredging of the Bayport Flare and Houston Ship Channel.
The contractor is required to remove approximately four million cubic yards of shoaled material from Redfish Reef to Beacon 78 with material being placed into the Mid Bay Placement Area and Placement Area 14.
“ Maintaining safe and navigable waterways is crucial to our economy ,” said Project Operations Manager Tricia Campbell, USACE Galveston District . “ The Houston and Bayport ship channels support numerous industries along the Texas Coast as well as the Port of Houston, which ranks number two in the nation based on total tonnage.”
Work is expected to begin in mid December 2013 with an estimated completion date of October 2014.
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
