Authority Delays Great Barrier Reef Dredging Decision (Australia)

Statement by Bruce Elliot, general manager for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority:

“ On 11 December 2013, Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt approved an application by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) to expand its coal terminal at Abbot Point.

“ As part of this project, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is now carefully considering the permit application from North Queensland Bulk Ports for disposal of dredge material.

“ We have extended the time for making a decision on the dredge disposal application under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act until 31 January 2014 .”
