The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, has awarded a $12,560,131 contract to Nordic Industries Inc. of Olivehurst to build the oxbow bypass project in Napa.
Nordic Industries’ was the best value out of four submittals received Nov. 20 in response to a request for proposals.
Flood walls will be built under the contract as options, with associated lighting features to be paid by local funds. The total value of the contract, including options, is $17.3 million.
The oxbow bypass is a major piece of the larger Napa River-Napa Creek Flood Protection Project, a partnership between the Corps, the City of Napa and the Napa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District to reduce flood risk.
Downtown Napa has suffered frequent flooding for decades, with major flooding occurring as recently as 2005. To reduce flood risk, the Napa River-Napa Creek Flood Protection Project has constructed flood walls and levees along the Napa River, restored wetlands, and installed culverts along Napa Creek to convey flood water within the channel. In 2009, the project received nearly $100 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, speeding construction and flood risk reduction.
Construction is scheduled to begin in February.
“The bypass is the heart of more than a decade of work to reduce the flood threat from the Napa River, ” Sacramento District project manager Marshall Marik said. “ We’re tremendously pleased to see it all come together, and we’re eager to get to construction as quickly as we can.”
