On 31 December 2013, the concession for the management and operations at Zayed Port will be returned to the port authority, Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC).
The concession is being returned to ADPC in line with the original planning for port capacity for the emirate of Abu Dhabi. This planning was outlined when ADPC was established.
ADT and ADPC have a long established close working partnership and have assembled a dedicated specialist team to manage the handover. That team and all of our employees at Zayed Port will be working to ensure that ‘business continues as normal’ both during the transition period and from 1 January 2014, when ADPC takes over.
All of the current infrastructure, equipment, systems and processes and employees will be transferred to ADPC to ensure a smooth transition. ADT and ADPC’s priority is to ensure smooth and uninterrupted high levels of service for all customers and stakeholders.
ADT has managed the Zayed Port concession since 2006, and moving forward, ADT and ADPC will continue to work closely together as ADT holds the 30 year concession to manage and operate the emirate’s state of the art, flagship Khalifa Port.
Zayed Port is Abu Dhabi’s oldest commercial port and has been the main city port for the last 40 years. Located in the north eastern part of the emirate, it covers an area of 5.1 square kilometers and consists of three basins:
– Zayed Port basin for deep-water vessels (cruise liners and general cargo vessels);
– Free Port basin for smaller vessels, tugs, barges and service crafts;
– New Free Port basin for lay-by and vessels that require minor repairs.
After moving all container traffic to the deep water Khalifa Port, Zayed Port handles the growing RoRo, general and bulk cargo volumes as well as the emerging cruise business, with future plans to develop the port as a world class cruise destination.
The first phase of the cruise terminal’s development has now been successfully completed, offering accommodation for two large cruise ships and one small vessel as well as a wide range of tourist friendly facilities. The upcoming development phases of the cruise terminal focus on a state-of-the-art terminal building and a traditionally themed souk and heritage area, with activities for both passengers and the general public.
