The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, and the Cape Lookout National Seashore (CALO), National Park Service (NPS) are extending the comment period on the Morehead City Harbor Draft integrated Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) and Environmental Impact Statement (EfS), Morehead City, North Carolina. The comment period deadline is now February 3, 2014.

The integrated DMMP and EIS for the Morehead City Harbor project has been developed using a consistent and logical procedure by which dredged material management measures and alternatives have been identified, evaluated, screened, and recommended so that dredged material disposal operations are conducted in a timely, environmentally sensitive, and cost-effective manner.

The EIS evaluates the long-term impacts of maintaining the existing Federal navigation channels in Morehead City Harbor.

The EIS concludes that Brandt island, the beaches of Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, and Shackleford Banks, the existing and proposed nearshore placement areas and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s designated ocean dredged material disposal site, provide adequate disposal capacity for maintenance of the Morehead City Harbor navigation project to its fully authorized dimensions for at least the next 20 years.
