The Environment Agency is installing a one-kilometre long stretch of temporary flood banking near Riverside Quay in Hull to provide extra protection from tidal flood risk.

Work began on Saturday to raise the height of a low-spot in the Humber’s defences, using a line of large sand and gravel-filled bags as a quick and temporary defence measure.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday, ahead of high spring tides forecast for the weekend.

Longer-term protection for Riverside Quay is being considered as part of the wider Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy, which involves working with local authorities to look at how and when defences along the estuary can be improved in the future.
