The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, has confirmed that King Company Inc., of Holland, Mich., will undertake maintenance dredging at Grand Haven and Holland harbors in southwest Michigan.
“Grand Haven and Holland harbors are essential marine commerce avenues and regular maintenance dredging keeps them effective and efficient, ” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer . “ We are proud stewards of the Great Lakes Navigation System and of the economic benefit this system brings to the nation.”
Dredging at Grand Haven and Holland should begin in early April and be completed by late-May. The King Company will dredge predominately sandy material from the harbors, placing it along the shoreline in Holland and near the shore in Grand Haven.
The contract was awarded under the Corps’ Multiple Award Task Order Contract, MATOC, which the Detroit District established with 10 companies capable of dredging in the Great Lakes. The MATOC is designed to provide greater flexibility and expedite the bid solicitation-award process for dredging in Great Lakes commercial shipping channels and harbors.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, maintains a navigation system that includes 94 harbors and the Great Lakes Connecting Channels that join lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie.
