Member for Kiama Gareth Ward is encouraging local Councils and stakeholders from across the region to apply for a share of $1.5 million worth of New South Wales Government funds on offer for coastal dredging projects.
Mr Ward said that the funding under the Government’s ‘Rescuing our Waterways’ program would support dredging projects that provide public benefits, like improved navigation for recreational and commercial vessels in local estuaries.
“ The program is part of the Sustainable Dredging Strategy, which provides a coordinated approach to improve the accessibility and health of our waterways, ” he said.
“ These waterways are the lifeblood of our communities, as they provide flow-on benefits for tourism and our local economies.
“ Over $1.5 million was committed for dredging projects under the first phase of the program. This additional $1.5 million under phase two reinforces the Government’s commitment to improve regional infrastructure and services.
“ The New South Wales Government will provide up to 50 per cent of the funding for each project under phase two.
“ Local councils will provide the remaining funds, or in partnership with stakeholders such as businesses or chambers of commerce and commercial operators or boating clubs – who are also invited to apply.
“ Councils and project proponents will be asked to submit detailed dredging proposals and take charge of all aspects of project planning and execution.
“ Funds will be made available for both preconstruction activities and implementation. Preference will be given to projects that are compatible with the estuary and/or coastal management planning process of the local council.
“ Demand for this dredging funding is expected to be extremely competitive so I encourage stakeholders to put forward applications addressing the assessment criteria, in a timely manner ,” Mr Ward said.
