Louisiana’s congressional delegation has managed to collect additional $4.5 million for the Houma Navigation Canal dredging, reports Houma Today.
The Houma Navigation Canal, which provides navigable access from the Gulf of Mexico to the GIWW, the Port of Houma, and other small ports along the canal, is in need of dredging because sediment buildup has reduced the depth in some places to as little as 12 feet.
Sediment buildup threatens the future of the Port of Terrebonne area causing navigation problems for larger sized ships.
The Louisiana delegation voiced concerns over the shortfall of dredging work in the canal in a letter sent to the Army’s assistant secretary of civil works.
“ This is causing many industries to light-load their vessels to transit the waterway safely; thus leading to increased, unnecessary costs to their businesses ,” the letter reads.
The additional funding expenses, which will be borne by the Army Corps, will be sufficient to cover the cost of Houma Navigation Canal, Terrebonne Bay and Cat Island Pass dredging.
