U.S. Sen. David Vitter, top Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, announced the passage of a bipartisan Clean Estuaries Act of 2014 in committee.
Vitter, along with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), worked together to develop the bill that was passed out of committee yesterday and will help provide grants to restore recognized estuaries.
“ Restoring our nation’s estuary treasures and helping local communities address water infrastructure problems is essential, especially to all the Louisianians who enjoy the cultural and economic benefits and all the natural resources our states estuaries have to offer ,” Vitter said. “ Getting the Clean Estuaries Act done will help improve estuaries across the country, including the Barataria-Terrebonne estuary.”
Vitter has long fought to protect and restore estuaries and wetlands. As a freshman Congressman in 2001 Vitter first passed his Lake Pontchartrain Basin Restoration Act. In 2012 Vitter passed a reauthorization, which will continue restoration efforts in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin for five more years through 2017.
