Last week, Congressman Tim Bishop received the final survey for the Mattituck Inlet dredging project from the Army Corps of Engineers.
Over 108,000 cubic yards of sand were removed from the inlet, while more than 2,300 cubic yards were dredged from the fillet. The Army Corps placed 98,251 cubic yards of sand on the beach to restore the effects of erosion.
“ The Mattituck Inlet dredging was a resounding success ,” said Congressman Bishop . “ The inlet will be easier to navigate and the beach will have been built up to a level that better protects coastal assets and recreational opportunities. Further, we will now have an established project from which to work should the beach need repair in the future.”
The final survey will be the guiding document for any potential future repairs that need to be made at the inlet or beach. Having a profile in place will allow the work to happen more quickly as a repair to an existing project, rather than starting from scratch with a new project.
The total cost of the dredging and beach nourishment at the Mattituck Inlet was about $2,5 mln.
