Initiated by the CEDA Environment Commission (CEC), a working group was formed in October 2013 to provide an overview on how adaptive management principles could contribute to the environmentally sound execution of dredging projects.
The following CEDA/WEDA members volunteered to share their expertise: Chris Adnitt (Royal HaskoningDHV – UK), Marijn Huijsmans (Witteveen+Bos – Netherlands), John Kirkpatrick (HR Wallingford – UK), Ram Mohan (Anchor QEA, LLC – USA), Marcel Van Parys (Jan De Nul – Belgium), Gerard van Raalte (Boskalis / Hydronamic – the Netherlands (Chair)), Henrich Röper (Hamburg Port Authority – Germany) and Craig Vogt (Craig Vogt Inc – USA).
Two working group meetings were held so far, during which the structure and content of the paper were discussed and drafted. At the meetings itself, and even more at other times, issues have been debated, contributions have been drafted, leading to the first full draft by April 2014.
The paper will present:
– what adaptive environmental management (AM) can do for a dredging project;
– which types of projects can benefit from AM and how projects should be ‘organised’ to achieve those objectives;
– what critical success factors should be taken into account;
– few case studies to illustrate the results so far achieved with applying AM.
The activities of the Working Group are closely harmonized with the simultaneously running Working Group on Environmental Monitoring Procedures, for obvious reasons of interaction between environmental monitoring and adaptive management, based on monitoring.
The target of the Working Group on Adaptive Management is to deliver the final draft to the CEC meeting in autumn 2014 for final review, acceptance and permission to publish.
