USA: Congressman Applauds Latest News on WRRDA Legislation

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana), issued the following statement after hearing of key details included in the Water Resources Development Act (WRRDA) final conference report:

“ This legislation will directly impact much of South Louisiana’s communities located in flood zones along the coast by providing protection against hurricanes and flooding. The legislation also addresses coastal restoration initiatives and reforms the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expedite project delivery times. Specifically, the WRDA legislation allows for the AGMAC project affecting the Port of Iberia to continue. This project deepens channels for ships bound for the Gulf of Mexico from 12 feet to 20 feet, allowing for more efficient marine access from the Port of Iberia and other Acadiana ports to the Gulf of Mexico. The AGMAC project has remained a top priority of mine as it means more jobs and growth opportunities for South Louisiana.

“I have fought for our nation’s ports and harbors by introducing the RAMP Act to restore funding for maintenance of these arteries of commerce. I am proud to see this WRDA legislation increases Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (HMTF) expenditures for dredging and waterway maintenance. HMTF expenditures will increase every year until 100% of the funds collected will be used toward operation and maintenance activities. All of these achievements will yield immediate results in South Louisiana, and I support this legislation.”
