AS Tallinna Sadam (Port of Tallinn) Council has agreed to invest EUR 1.8 mln in the Paldiski South Harbour dredging project.
The investment in deepening the port’s shipping channel will allow Paldiski South Port to receive ships with total tonnage of up to 75,000 GT. According to their press center, the depth of this area will be increased from 13.5 meters to 14.5 meters.
Port of Tallinn’s Chairman, Remo Holsmer, said that recent activities geared towards enhancing the capabilities of the port will meet the needs of both present and future clients.
Owned by the Port of Tallinn, Paldiski South Port is the main Ro-Ro harbour for Estonia. The core activity of the port is focused on the handling of ro-ro cargo, scrap metal, timber, peat and oil products. The current phase of the Paldiski South Harbour development includes construction of new quays and enlargement of car terminal areas.
Also worth noting is that the Port of Tallinn recently opened its new EUR 9.34 million cruise ship quay. Now the port is perfectly capable to receive cruise ships of up to 340 meters in length, up to 42 meters in width, and with the draft of up to 9 meters.
During the construction, the volume of bottom dredging amounted to a total of 12,300 cubic meters, and over 200 steel piles 30–46 meters in length were installed in the seabed.
