The Dutch water sector has won a contract from the Polish government to assess and improve the navigability of the Wisla River. A consortium of companies including Deltares, Rothuizen, Arcadis, EuroLandscape and RDH will work on issues like flood risk management, hydrology and spatial planning.

Wisla River is the longest and largest river in Poland. The river is not navigable for vessels with bigger draughts. Particularly in the area of Warsaw, the river is usually too shallow to be navigated, meaning that commercial shipping is no longer possible.

To solve this problem, seventeen Polish municipalities in the vicinity have got together, asking the consortium to develop an integrated approach for the river area between Warsaw and Gdansk covering issues such as flood risk management, hydrology and spatial planning.

The signing ceremony was done during a Dutch trade mission to Poland (June 24-25) that was led by Minister Ploumen in order to strengthen the ties between the two countries in the areas of water, energy, agriculture and transport.
