The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Coastal Management Program (ICMP) will host three public meetings over the next two weeks to present and answer questions about the Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control (CNPC) Program.
Nonpoint source pollution comes from many diffuse sources, and since it cannot be traced to any one source, it is everyone’s responsibility. This kind of water pollution is primarily related to stormwater management. Along the Illinois coast of Lake Michigan, stormwater is mostly managed, treated and ultimately discharged away from the Lake Michigan basin. Yet, despite billions of dollars in infrastructure investments over the decades, basements still flood and wastewater still overflows into Lake Michigan.
The ICMP, like all states with a Coastal Management Program, is charged with addressing nonpoint source pollution. In cooperation with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency 319 program, the ICMP developed a CNPC program to guide a long term commitment to helping address nonpoint source pollution in the Coastal Zone.
Interested citizens, organizations and other stakeholders are encouraged to attend a public meeting to provide feedback on the CNPC program and share concerns about nonpoint source pollution in their community.
