Minister of State for Transport Baroness Kramer was in Gloucestershire, Friday 4 July, to find out how the county is rising to the challenge of recovering from winter flooding and see how government funding is helping it to be better prepared for severe weather.
The minister visited the Severnside villages of Maisemore and Tirley, both affected by the winter flooding at the beginning of the year. She met with local councillors, flood wardens, representatives of Tewksbury Flood Action Group and others who have been involved in the communities’ flood response.
As ministerial representative for flood recovery in Gloucestershire, she also heard about how the wider county had coped with floods from the Cotswolds to the banks of the Severn.
Visiting new flood defences at Deerhurst, between Tewkesbury and Gloucester, Baroness Kramer said:
“From Tewkesbury in the north to Stroud and Cirencester in the south, many parts of Gloucestershire have felt the effects of flooding, both this winter and further in the past. I am impressed by what I have heard not only about the response from authorities and communities during the flooding, but also by what has been done in the short months since to get the county back on its feet.”
“I will be reporting back to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Committee on Flooding to keep them up to date on the excellent work that has been done in Gloucestershire and also the lessons learned from previous floods.”
