New moves are underway to explore the restoration of a popular seafront paddling pool in Brightlingsea. The seawater pool at Western Promenade, which is more than 30 years old, has become silted up with mud over time.
Now Tendring District Council (TDC) is looking into exactly what needs to be done, what consents are required to carry out any work and how much it will cost.
It is likely to involve draining the pool, digging out the basin and having the material taken away and disposed of.A new liner will need to be installed, the inlet and outlet repaired and new material brought in to build up the beach again.
Nick Turner, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Coast Protection , said it is early days but it is something the Council is exploring. “ This is very much the beginning of the beginning but we want to find out exactly what work needs to be done, what hurdles we need to overcome and what sort of bill we would be looking at ”.
“ There is no doubt it is a very popular facility which is well used and it has become naturally silted up over the years. I have asked officers to gather together all the necessary information and we will take it from there, ” added Turner .
“ The restoration of this site has been looked at in the past but it is case of identifying the funding ,” said District and Town Councillor Alan Goggin.
The first step will be to undertake a feasibility study.
