A combination of warmer weather conditions, seagrass accumulation and low tides at Jurien Boat Harbor are thought to be responsible for a recent deterioration in water quality in the harbor.
Facility manager, the Department of Transport (DoT) has temporarily closed the beach at the harbor and the Department of Health has recommended people do not swim in the water or consume fish caught in the marina.
DoT General Manager of Coastal Infrastructure Steve Jenkins said the recent deterioration in water quality was disappointing given the recent completion of seagrass wrack trawling at the harbor entrance.
“ Sand excavation also commenced this week as part of a range of interim strategies to improve the health of the marina waters ,” Mr Jenkins said.
“A larger dredging campaign is required and planning and environmental approvals are in progress with works expected from late 2014.”
DoT has also implemented a data collection program at the harbor and the results will be used as part of detailed modelling to determine achievable long-term strategies to address environmental issues at the facility.
The Jurien Boat Harbour Steering Committee chaired by Shane Love MLA was established in February to oversee interim improvement strategies and provide advice to Government.
The Shire of Dandaragan has erected warning signs on the harbor beach, and in conjunction with the Department of Health is monitoring bacterial water quality levels. DoT will continue to monitor the water quality and maintain a clean shoreline.
