The annual sand dredging program at Tallebudgera Creek started last week with sand to be pumped onto Burleigh beach over the next five weeks.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the work was is an integral part of the program to maintain and replenish sand on the city’s beaches ready for summer. “ The dredge is moving about 2000 cubic metres a day. Over the 5 week period, more than 30,000m3 will be pumped onto Burleigh beach, this equates to around 15 Olympic sized swimming pools. ”

“ The dredge pumps the sand overland, about 1.1km, and is released into the southern corner of Burleigh beach. Natural wave action will help to spread the dredged sand up to approximately 500 metres north of the deposition area ,” said Cr Tate. “ While we try to ensure minimal disruption to locals and beachgoers, you will see pipe and machinery at Burleigh to distribute the sand, and we ask people to take care around these works over the coming weeks. These necessary works have been an annual event for the last 20 years.”

“ We have committed $890,000 for dredging works at Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks this financial year, a vital part of the City’s 19 Million dollar overall investment in our beaches and waterways ,” added Cr Tate.

The dredging improves tidal flushing, flood water conveyance, water quality and will help to replace sand on the beach and reduce scarping.

The Tallebudgera dredging campaign is scheduled for completion on 19 September 2014, prior to the school holiday period. The dredge will then move to Currumbin Creek where it will dredge the sand deposits from the mouth of the creek and place the sand on southern Palm Beach. These works are scheduled to be completed between 7 October – 19 December 2014.
