The 73m-long trailing suction hopper dredger “Sospan Dau” is about to start the next phase of Pevensey Bay’s summer/autumn’s annual beach recharge.

About 5,000m3 was added in early June, and the next two weeks should see a further 15,000m3 of sand placed on the beach. In total Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd (PCDL) expects to deliver around 40,000m3 before winter starts, and will be working with Sospan Dau to deliver further sediment in late September and October.

As usual deliveries will be made in the hour leading up to high water, and all will be deposited in front of Sovereign Harbor rock revetment. There will be no machines on the beach during this operation.

The Pevensey Bay Sea Defense scheme is one of the first in the world to be funded as a Public Private Partnership (PPP/PFI). In committing to a 25 year contract, Pevensey’s residents and environment are guaranteed a consistent standard of defense until at least 2025. This approach to beach maintenance has allowed the Environment Agency and PCDL to develop and advance ‘best practice’ in provision of sea defense services.
