Denham’s century old recreational jetty will be replaced with a brand new, multipurpose jetty through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced $2.2 million in funding had been made available after inspections revealed the jetty urgently needed replacement.
Mr Nalder said the jetty replacement project, to be managed in consultation with the Shire of Shark Bay, would deliver significant improvements to the local community and users. “ The new jetty, which will be 30 meters longer than the existing structure, includes designated fishing and swimming areas without moorings on the east side to ensure safety, ” he said.
“ The design of the outer section of the new jetty will allow short term stays for recreational vessels, while the middle section will continue to accommodate boat pens on a permanent basis. ”
Mr Redman also said that the replacement of the current jetty with a new, modern, multipurpose structure would see it continue as the centerpiece of the Denham foreshore.
“ The new jetty will continue to be one of the few locations where locals and tourists have formal access to enjoy the waters of the World Heritage Listed Shark Bay and it will also provide an economic boost to the region, making Denham a more attractive ,” he said.
The new jetty is part of the $150million of Royalties for Regions committed through the Gascoyne Revitalization Plan for major infrastructure projects.
The project will begin later this year with completion expected in 2015-16 and before the 400th anniversary and commemorative celebrations of Dirk Hartog’s landing.
