Peaceful community action and last minute letters outlining crucial new evidence from Senator Scott Ludlam has ‘Stopped the Clock’ on the disastrous canal and marina development at Point Peron.
After months of well-orchestrated community campaigning to halt a decision by Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt on the proposed marina, the decision has now been delayed until October 7, 2014.
Senator Ludlam will table a petition with over 500 signatures today in the Senate, collected in just one day last weekend at a community rally against the marina in Rockingham.
Protesters to the canal development argue dredging the area will cause salination issues with the ground water and affect the rare Thrombolites (living fossils) at Lake Richmond.
“The defiant, yet calm and measured campaigning by the Western Australian community has protected the Point Peron for at least another few week, but we will not give up on this precious bush forever site ,” Ludlam said.
“ It is clear the community don’t want this project. It is also clear that the Federal Government keeps having to delay their decision because they have not followed due diligence in investigating the enormous environmental impact this project will have at Point Peron.
“A number of urgent questions remain on this project, with key information including water data and even a business case missing from former proponents Cedar Woods and Landcorp, now transferred to $2 company Cranford.
“While it is a win for the community today, the only satisfactory result is for the Minister to reject outright this unwanted and disastrous canal development.”
