Burnham Associates is entering the completion phase of the maintenance dredging of the Conley Marine Terminal in South Boston, MA.
This terminal serves two major global shipping lines, and handles over one million metric tons of cargo, annually. This maintenance dredging project will remedy shoaling in one of the berths, taking the depth back to the full 45′ required to accommodate ever larger post-panamax container vessels.
Utilizing the clamshell dredge Samson III, and the 2,000 cubic yard dump scow SE103, the job moved along smoothly, with over 6,000 cubic yards of material removed in just over a week.
Special care was taken to avoid any logistical hiccups in the demanding shipping schedule of this bustling terminal, including complete removal of the plant from the area to be dredged in the event that a vessel was scheduled to berth in the dredge prism.
All disposal of dredged materials was handled at the Chelsea Creek Contained Aquatic Disposal cell to minimize any environmental impacts.
